SNAPPED: The Podcast

409

SNAPPED is a brutally honest inquiry into historically white sororities and fraternities at American universities. After sharing her own harrowing experience as an Alpha Phi sister in season one, host Lucy Taylor passes the microphone to SNAPPED listeners to tell their own stories, illustrating the rampant racism, slut shaming, and hazing that continue to plague these institutions. The result is a plea for parents, college students, and potential new members to hear what sororities and fraternities don’t want you to know.

This is Greek life, uncensored.

Honest BTS look at Greek life
Interesting to hear interviews from former, current and recent Greek Life members…as opposed to the constant stream of positive spin from NPC. Excellently done and eye opening for anyone considering Greek Life (for themselves or someone who has a family member in college).

Why I hate the Greek system-summary
This podcast rocks. I love how they dig into the bizarre mentality behind Greek life on campus. 10 stars!

    It’s basically true crime
I’m obsessed. I binged the entire thing in 2 weeks. Lucy is incredible, I’m completely in awe of her confidence. She was in a literal cult and knew her worth enough to get herself out of it and then spill all the tea. This is basically true crime for people who are burnt out on murder. And everyone needs to be quiet about her voice it’s fine lol

    Excellent Journey Through Greek Nightmares
I heard Lucy on the ALBC podcast and found myself intrigued by her thoughtfulness + perspective. Season 1 is a little rough audio-wise, but she did a great job telling her story and situating herself in a larger framework. She followed this up with a fantastic Season 2, bringing in voices from older sorority members and historians. I'm binging S2 now and can't wait to hear what's waiting in Season 3.

more disturbing than any true crime
Just started listening yesterday and have almost binged the whole thing. It’s self produced by a woman who was entrenched in sorority culture and then ultimately realized how bad the whole system is and decided to create a podcast sharing her story and other stories. It’s a little scrappy and not super polished but the content and research is ON POINT. It is by far the most disturbing podcast i’ve ever listened to, and I’ve listened to many cult/true crime podcasts, because she doesn’t dramatize it at all—the interviews are all extremely candid and real. She brings a sense of humor to it too which sometimes makes it more entertaining .. and other times more heartbreaking. I am literally in college and had no idea how corrupt the whole greek life system is, and who actually runs it (spoiler: not the students!). Would highly recommend, you will learn a lot

    Season 3 is 5 stars
Not going to lie, I was almost out during season 1, but Lucy and the crew got better each season. Season 3 was well researched and produced. I am hopeful there is more on the horizon for the pod.

    Brave young woman
I lived adjacent to “Greek Life” at a major university in the 80’s and was often annoyed and sometimes frightened by the unfettered behavior of the members. Lucy is very brave for exposing these behaviors and the deeper connections. The podcast quality improved greatly by the third season.

    Truly a podcast with depth
This podcast is highly bingeable and informative. Whether you’re a person entertaining the idea of Greek life or a parent of a teen, you need to listen! This breaks it all down: shady financials, deeply troubling social structures, cultic behavior, and emotionally damaging practices…there is a lot to protect young people from. Greek life is not for everyone- and by the time you’re done listening it probably won’t be for you either.

If you have kids headed to college, listen!
Well researched podcast that clearly presents the risks and broken system associated with Greek life. While initially, you may think this ais about one gal’s experience, it’s not. It’s about the system, which is broken and endangering our college kids.

    Good content, horrible vocal fry
The podcast is interesting but if vocal fry sounds like nails on a chalkboard, skip it.

    Anti Sorority Stories
I appreciate this podcast because sorority life has blown up since tiktok. My daughter joined A Phi at her university and also had a terrible experience and dropped ( not for dramatic or traumatic reasons such as Lucy) but she saw a phony side to the girls, party culture and those who don’t party often get shunned. She didn’t like the mean girl drama and other things. Once she dropped not ONE “sister” ever spoke to her again. Social media often glamorizes Greek life and gives girls FOMO to rush. My only complaint is how the podcast is done. Very valley girl speech, the singing, the weird cuts and editing. I loved the seasons where others told their stories and I’d like to hear more.

Must Listen for Moms of College Bound Daughters
I grew up and graduated in the town with the largest greek system (UofA.) My only connection to Greek Life was selling them GS cookies and yes I was the top salesperson. When my daughter mentioned she wanted to go to a school with Sororities I asked some friends in my current state that had been involved in Greek Life and they were positive about their experience. I thought maybe it was different outside of Bama. I just binged all 3 seasons after hearing the episode on a Little Bit Culty. I have sent it to my teen daughter. I greatly appreciate you and your guests sharing your experiences.

Wonderful Podcast - Esp Season 3
Very impressed with how the podcast evolved and all the interviews and research that went into this. I really hope there’s a season 4. I was never in Greek life, I briefly dated a couple people in that were part of Greek life when I was in college, and I was always left with a bad taste in my mouth anytime I heard details about the experiences of those people I dated. I was also s*xually a**aulted by someone in a fraternity, and I never had the courage to speak up about it. The bravery of Lucy and the people she interviewed is very inspiring and I hope the best for this podcast and community 💛

    Brave podcast
Updating from 4 to 5 stars after listening to seasons 2 and 3. Really like how she expanded to explore more stories and data about Greek life. Lots of food for thought as someone who was in a sorority! Old review: Just finished season 1. This is definitely just one woman’s story but I related to a lot of her experiences as someone who was in a sorority 10 years ago. Super brave of her to share her story, even the parts that don’t paint her in the best light. I’m so sorry she went through this. I don’t think she can make the big conclusions about abolishing Greek life without additional investigative journalism and bigger data than was was shared in season 1, but I also think it’s not an unreasonable conclusion to make. Looking forward to listening to later seasons!
  • A&Nmom
Good for anyone who wants their daughter/ granddaughter to be in a sorority
Things have gotten much worse, sisters. Listen here if you want to get the whole story. Sororities are not as concerned with your daughter as they used to be

Great podcast stop the singing though
Great podcast but please stop singing. I wanted to send to some friends with daughters heading to college but the singing will drive them nuts. It sort of takes away from the serious nature of the subject. Otherwise you do an amazing job and are a great podcaster.

We’ll researched. The smirky tone and singing…
…are juvenile off-putting. Especially the singing. Please stop.

Really great well produced podcast covering such an important topic. I was instantly hooked and am so hopeful to hear future seasons.

    Enthralling introspective listen
when i say that SNAPPED became my life when i listened, i cannot overstate that. i roped in my partner and my friends. all of us have or have had some connection to greek life, and all of us are walking away from this podcast changed. i heard MY STORY told by others voices. themes of survivorship, sexual violence, self blame were relatable in more ways than i expected. i feel less alone and more empowered.
  • jsndbdd d
    Good.
I’m pathologically contrary and counter culture so sororities always made me cringe. This confirms what i suspected they were about all along. Congrats for standing on your own two feet and not needing the validation of the masses to live your best life.
  • Nicosylvan1978
    Extremely important
Lucy, great job with this podcast. I’ve never really heard a comprehensive taking-on of the Greek system and all it’s many abuses and injustices. I think we only know the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the extent that these “old boy networks” work to gain and preserve wealth and power for white men. And how that keeps our society’s inequities firmly in place. I think it might be important to look at the more positive role played by traditionally black sororities and fraternities. Also, more investigative/historical information? Prevalence of eating disorders amongst sorority women? Also! Look into “Eating clubs” and “Finals Clubs” in the Ivy League? If there were ever an “Illuminati” pulling the strings of society and politics, they’d originate in these - the most elite, oldest, most secretive clubs 🤣😭🤣😭
  • Henry Cavendish
    everyone should listen
I just finished college (I was a GDI) and I had no idea Greek life was this bad! Everyone should listen to this before they go to college or consider joining Greek life
  • enatalieagn
    Way too much vocal fry
Got 5 minutes and 44 seconds in and had to turn it off. The extreme vocal fry and weird reality-show style chopped editing of every word was driving me nuts. I really wanted to listen to this but I cannot handle the fry.
  • tessyuh
Great job exposing the toxicity of Greek life
It’s crazy the level of exploitation Greek culture enables and the hate it perpetuates (if you need evidence just scroll through the one star comments) that are perpetuating heteronormativity, sexism (vocal fry is sexiest), transphobic, racism, etc. the idea that someone sharing their story and even now people are commenting saying it’s your fault or not my sorority lol, defensive much? Thank you for sharing. I cannot wait for these problematic groups to disappear from campuses. I cannot believe that any sorority would focus on ig pics and not rape culture, rape definitions, and security at parties. They just want your money and to keep women oppressed. It’s gross.

    Yessssss 🥳
Season 3 is off with a bang! Bravo Lucy!! Thank you for sharing these stories and putting a framework/language to something that so many of us have experienced. I feel less alone each episode. A podcast like Snapped is long overdue. In abolition solidarity ✊🏼

Great show. I admire your bravery.

    Can’t wait for season 3!!
I binged season 1 in one day while moving into a new apartment—this podcast is such an interesting and well conducted production. My college didn’t even have Greek life, but being a grad student + teaching assistant at a private university where Greek life is a HUGE deal, this was a very fun insight into that world

Dark side of Greek college life
When I was young many years ago, I didn’t rush because I couldn’t afford it, was merely pretty rather than beautiful, and knew none of them wanted an introvert nerd like me. Sounds like I didn’t miss anything. Thanks for the courage in sharing your story.
  • Sweet Tea in Tennessee
    Oh puhleasssssse!!!
Grow up girl! This girl PUT HERSELF in sketchy situations and then blamed someone else. According to her it’s all someone else’s fault. She wasn’t being held hostage by a foreign government for Christ sakes. She could’ve put an end to her participation in greek life and she is a very weak girl and God forbid she ever have a real crisis in her life. So weird how she thinks it’s normal for the way she behaved and everyone else is the bad guy?!! Is this our future? This generation? For God sakes girl grow a backbone and take responsibility for your own actions first! Get over it and stop putting yourself in bad situations. Good luck in the real world. Oh, and yes, her voice is so aggravating.

    Best/most informative greek life series
Snapped provides the unfiltered truth of Greek life in the USA. From the rush process to everything surrounding the culture. A must listen.
  • Lay Bay
    Amazing
She is clearly super passionate and knowledgeable about greek life. The greek life system is a perfect breeding ground for white supremacy and the patriarchy, and I’m glad someone is shedding light on how messed up these institutions are!
  • Michelle Earle
    The worst!
This is the worst podcast ever…her voice alone is hard to listen to. If you want to understand what is wrong with society, it’s all right here.
  • Danielle dee1111
    Couldn’t turn it off
I went into this podcast with extremely limited knowledge of Greek life and found it riveting. Thank you Lucy for sharing your story and standing up for what’s right even after being broken down by this cult-like system.

The ugly truth about Greek life
When I joined a sorority, it was great at first. Things ended up going downhill and I went early alum at the beginning of my junior year. For most of a decade after that, I still believed that my experience was because of a few “bad apples” and was defensive of the institution of Greek life itself. This podcast is very very true to my experience at a big 10 school in Greek life and has completely changed the way I see my own past situation and what caused it. If you had a good experience in Greek life and don’t want to hear about the problems, this podcast is not for you. If you want something sugarcoated, this podcast is not for you. If you are just not ready to reflect on Greek life, especially the sexism and rape culture aspects of Greek life with a really critical lens, this podcast is not for you right now. If you want to better understand all the ways that Greek life harms and fails its own members and has FOR YEARS, this podcast is for you.

    Vocal fry intolerable
I do wanted to listen, but the vocal fry sweet my teeth on edge. Consider a vocal coach. I know you are smart- I heard you on A Little Bit Culty. Your voice is sabotaging you.

    Insufferable
First of all, you should know that this podcast is about the Alpha Phi sorority at the University of Maryland. This was revealed on the A Little Bit Culty podcast. While this is an interesting expose of Greek life, anyone who is shocked by the fact that sororities are shallow, oppressive, conformist, focused on partying, sex, and pleasing men (making members statistically more prone to sexual assault) hasn’t been paying attention the past 120 years. I went to college in the early 90s and wouldn’t touch Greek life with a 10 foot pole for this very reason. Even though this is nothing new, I am glad that there is this platform to expose the dangers of Greek life to this generation. However, as a mom of two kids around this podcaster’s age, this podcast is a snapshot of everything that is wrong with the attitudes that are pervasive in modern youth culture that handicaps young people and prevents them from becoming mature, functional adults. Privilege, entitlement, lack of accountability, lack of ownership, lack of awareness or acceptance that choices come with consequences, and lack of research and thought before getting into something. I left this podcast shaking my head at the missed opportunity this young woman had for personal growth when she took the easy road of blaming everyone else for the consequences of her decisions.
  • @NinaJ
    Enjoyed the story
I enjoyed the story and think you did a great job telling it. However, you might look closer at your audio editing and not do so many quick cuts. It’s super distracting. Also, consider a vocal coach. The vocal fry is really distracting.

    Uncovering the covered up
I am so thankful you shared your story. I wish I could have heard this before my nieces went in to the sorority life. I appreciate your truth and transparency!! Keep living your best life!! ❤️

Thank you for sharing your story! Also really well don’t!!!

    Can’t stop listening
I was involved with the same sorority as Lucy in college and had what I thought to be at the time a positive experience, much different than hers. And yet, as I listen to these stories and think about members I knew who disaffiliated over the years, I can’t help but notice that I was definitely participating in a deeply broken system and probably inflicting this same harm on others. I was just too indoctrinated and too much in the inner circle to notice. But 15 years later I can see it. If you were involved in Greek life, before you jump to conclusions and start defending, stop. Listen. Be curious. This is an important take.
  • FeechPeach
It’s not about trusting the process it’s about knowing yourself
Choose a sorority based on superficial things and that’s what you will get from it in return. Never heard you mention you wanted a group where you could be yourself, just that you wanted to sit with the pretty people. Pretty on the outside, ugly on the inside. Bravo.
  • KimMaier27
    Thank you
Thank you Lucy for bringing light to a needed conversation. I have never been in a Sorority but the information discussed is helpful in my search to discern healthy organizations from dysfunctional cultic groups so that I can be involved in spaces that are in integrity with my values. I love the song you sang to disaffiliate!!!
  • Pinkchampagne73
    Great Podcast!
When I first started listening, all the trauma from personal experiences with Greek Life in college came back, and I realized I still have hurtful emotions that are really deeply buried from events that took place over 20 years ago. It was actually very uncomfortable, but it has been so healing listening to Lucy tell her story with honesty, vulnerability, and humor. She is a natural storyteller and performer. I’m so glad she decided to use this platform to share her story. It is helping more people than she probably realizes.
  • Slug4Life84
    Insightful
Seems that most of the low scoring reviews are from those still in this cult, victim blamers, and haters who dislike her for her voice. This was truly insightful and reconfirms how I felt towards the Greek like during my college years. No individuality and extremely problematic on many levels.
  • carpedkov
    Disturbing
Great Podcast! I had no idea that college students spent this much negative energy on recruiting their peers. Absolutely horrible experience for Lucy! I have a feeling sororities may change after shedding a bright light on these inclusive “Clubs”. Shame on so many young woman for Keeping this recruitment process alive. I enjoy your voice and stories! Keep them Coming!
  • Ada T
    Unfortunate
The unfortunate experiences of Lucy are not indicative of universal experiences. Her treatment and her generalizations are inappropriate.

    Keep going 👍🏼

    The Vocal fry is unbearable
Please don’t ruin all your hard work with an unbearable voice quality. If you can take a podcasting course you can hire a voice coach. Vocal fry is a learned behavior (probably emphasized in your sorority) and can be unlearned. Your good message is lost.
