The Squarepeg Podcast

34

Squarepeg is a podcast in which I talk to other late identified autistic women and nonbinary people about their lives, their autism journeys, and what they’ve learned along the way. I’m Amy Richards, and I was diagnosed autistic in 2016, when I was 37. I’ve been sharing my conversations with other autistic adults since 2020. I hope you’ll find these conversations inspiring and thought provoking, and that they’ll help you feel more connected to a worldwide community of people with similar experiences.

So helpful for those who are late-diagnosed
I haven’t been able to find any support after diagnosis in my 40s, but this podcast has helped more than I can say. Thank you to Amy and everyone who visits the podcast for sharing your experiences!

One of my top 3 favorite podcasts on Autism
I love the content of this podcast and the interview style, actually letting people speak and not getting into a bunch of meaningless chitchat. Very laid back and contemplative. I actually feel calmer while listening to this. Please keep going!

A great place for self reflection
This podcast is a positive and affirming space to come and listen to folks who have had autistic journeys. Sometimes I feel like they are my twins and other times I find kindred spirits in stories so different from my own. The host is a great listener and I truly enjoy this podcast.

    Squarepeg is the best!
This is one of my all time favorite podcasts. Amy has done a great job of creating a community of late diagnosed autistic folks that are kind enough to share their experiences with the rest of us. If you’re autistic, think that you might be, or know someone who is - square peg is a must listen!

    Never Miss!
I found Amy’s podcast early on in my Google searching of “Am I Autistic”? Listening to stories of other people’s experiences of being autistic has been just what I needed to pursue a diagnosis myself. So grateful for this podcast! This is seriously my favorite podcast of all time, each new episode goes straight to the top of my feed to listen to before anything else. If you’re autistic, think you might be, or if someone in your life has just been diagnosed, this podcast is not to be missed.

    Production quality
I am a new listener was SO excited to listen to S6E9 after scrolling through episodes. This is exactly the kind of content I need!!! Sadly, I could not focus on the words of the wonderful Ms. Parfitt because of the mouth sounds accompanying her speech. I want to listen to it, but I just can’t handle it. I’m so disappointed!!! :( Normally I’d just deal with it, but since this is a podcast focused on late diagnosed autism, I figured it would be worth mentioning as it’s likely that I’m not the only listener who struggles with this. I am not a podcaster myself, but familiar enough with production to know that there are things that can be done to lessen the mouth sounds.

    Feeling seen and not alone
This podcast has been one of the most important resources on my journey of late diagnosis. I feel seen, recognized, validated, and understood in a way I never imagined. I had gotten used to this sense of being somehow mistakenly here and not able to fit or belong and to hear the voices of so many other late-diagnosed people echoing my own life experiences is something I will always be grateful for. Thank you, Amy, for making this podcast which has been like a refuge and place of healing for me over the past year. I have laughed and cried with you and your guests and I will keep coming back for the many insights and realizations that these interviews offer, and for the simple joy of hearing really deep, smart, and honest conversations about life.

    Diagnosed at 32
I am so thankful for this podcast. I was diagnosed with autism and ADHD just under a year ago at 32 and am currently working full time at a grocery store trying to find employment that will work for my needs as an autistic person. I’m in a constant state of burnout and struggle with wanting to give up everyday. Hearing stories of people who have gone through what I’m going through and made it give me hope to keep going even though it feels impossible in a society that doesn’t want you.

    Learning from each episode
The Squarepeg host and guests are teaching me so much about what it is like to be living an autistic life in a neurotypically-run world. The stories of the autistic women and non-binary and trans individuals are compelling and emotional. This podcast is a real gift. I’ve listened to roughly ten episodes and will continue until I’ve heard them all.

    You’re a witch, Hermione
Getting my ASD diagnosis as an adult was like getting the letter from Hogwarts that never came. Listening to Squarepeg is like walking into the Leaky Cauldron for the first time and meeting all the other muggle-born witches and wizards who wandered in earlier. Thank you, Amy!

    Life changing and validating
Thank you so much for this podcast. Hearing the intricacies of people’s stories on the spectrum in this kind, compassionate format has been so validating and honestly, life changing for me. I am recently self diagnosed (though an ex-partner named this for me over a decade ago, I wasn’t ready to hear it then). This year it became undeniable and I have been in the process of educating myself. This podcast has made me both laugh and cry with recognition and validation and I couldn’t be more grateful for it. Thank you for your work!

    Glad this podcast exists!
Amy is a thoughtful and compassionate host, and this podcast is an excellent place to hear stories that need telling about women and trans/non-binary people on the spectrum. Too often these voices get erased, and it’s wonderful to hear them amplified especially in such an honest and “real” way. Fantastic! :)
