ModeShift

Transportation needs a major overhaul. ‘ModeShift’ is a series that explores the past, present, and future of how we move. Many converging factors are forcing us to rethink mobility: Aging infrastructure, outdated planning, inequitable access, and rapid technology shifts. Co-hosts Andrei Greenawalt and Tiffany Chu bring together historical examples, personal stories, and timely case studies to explore the future of transportation in the U.S.

    Transportation is a key piece
Good people doing good work for good reasons, and doing it well. The production value of this limited series is top-notch. It’s an informative audio essay outlining problems, solutions, and visions for how we move people.

Affordable, Autonomous, On Demand is a given!
Need to move off the constant "equity" buzzword discussion ( which seems to halt real solution thinking & discourse) and realize that No Social class group finds it appealing to share a ride on a foul smelling, dirty, late arriving bus, subway, regional train or auto which double serves as a performance platform for criminals, and people that are in need of housing and healthcare. Everyone wants an affordable, autonomous, on demand and safe way to be mobile. In addition the discussions on the podcast seem to be centered on starting from scratch in a futuristic utopian smart city environment. However, what about fixing what we have first. Some possibilities: 1) dense cities such as NYC need to lift their pedestrian, scooter and bike traffic to a 3 or 4 dimensional solution. Create a highline ribbon path throughout the city and move that use off ground to the air paths. The current highline refurbished and old elevated rail spur and it is extremely popular and life affirming pedestrian pathway 2) create on demand transport for all seniors for day and nightime access to enjoy the activities & continue to be able to contribute to their communities 3) regional railroads & light rail need more north/ south and east/ west rail lines that can intersect and connect disparate neighborhoods in order to bring people closer to work, learning and shopping hubs 4) create safer subways and more reliable current mass transit - cameras, video, audio, clear signage, connectivity and payment options 5) encourage businesses that pay real living wages to bring manufacturing & research closer to the workforce and begin investing again in America 6) smaller regional airports are underserving their communities and need to be tied in to commerce and shipping by becoming connective transport hubs 7) create drone paths to deliver products closer to users 8) create transportation, commerce and housing focused research and education centers of excellence that will help develop solutions to current and future mobility solutions. The Texas A & M transportation instutute is a great model that every State could consider imitating

Was waiting for this to be a Via salespitch.
It happened on episode 4. Like many people, I wanted to believe that on-demand in the right conditions could be a convenient, great model. Everyone loves an app based crutch and the rural unlocking stories are real. But what's missing in the conversation is the trip cost and average rider occupancy to operate Dial-a-ride, and it's shiny new cousin, third party app-based vanpooling. Years of Paratransit in all pockets of the country give every community the experience of understanding the unwieldy costs both in operator to rider ratio, and in emissions for completely deadheaded rides no better than a taxi or an Uber. We persist with paratransit, because it is right and it is necessary (and there are federal mandates). Scale it to deserving seniors, or folks who are low income or from disadvantaged communities and it still makes sense, if you really can't see how fixed route transit becomes a rural solution. Fair enough, but the problem is that the microtransit model is promising pooling, but usually when you lift the hood, an 8 or 10 or 15 person van is carrying a single rider if you really want it to be point to point and responsive. So it's an emissions fail, and not a sustainable model to pursue in most cases. Can we electrify oversized vans with no production emissions? No, not in 2050, because lithium batteries will be in too high of demand worldwide with no prioritization planning. Full sized battery powered vehicles are currently on a trajectory to be playthings for the rich instead of an actual climate solution Expect microtransit to be tried and used everywhere that mode shift is being done as the exception. But if we want true sustainable mode shift, it will be with electrified trolleys, regional rail, streetcars all using pantograph or 3rd rail. It will definitely not be with someone new trying to make Uberpool and Lyftpool scalable. If this wasn't sponsored by Via and the two hosts weren't fully invested in microtransit and tech fixes for transit, it could be great. I'll keep listening because I try to consume as much transit info as I can.

    Interesting and engaging!
Fantastic podcast that explores transportation- you’ll find yourself wanting to chime in along with the conversation! Great content - engaging and relatable to anyone (regardless if you use public transit or not!)!
  • PelicanDFW
    Informative and thoughtful
Strongly recommend this show - it is independently minded and hosted by intelligent and informed advocates. So many transit advocacy content today is just shouty, unrealistic or uninformed. ModeShift is different and acknowledges the fact that re-introducing transit into the American ‘personal mobility mindset’ is huge and complicated endeavor. I look forward to more episodes on how to address our present sorry state.

Finally - a transit podcast with production value
Love podcasts like Talking Headways and Monocle’s The Urbanist, but we’ve never had a podcast in the space with the production values and narrative to match Gimlet and NPR - now we do. A great start to this new series, with great guests to boot!
